Session: Understanding II: Immune dysregulation and autoimmunity
Prof Gabriele Riemekasten is a professor for Rheumatology and Inflammatory Systemic Diseases and the head of the Clinic for Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology at the Lubeck Campus of the University Clinic Schleswig-Holstein in Germany. Pro Riemekasten is a specialist in internal medicine, subspecialty rheumatology, with an additional qualification in physical medicine. At the University Clinic Schleswig-Holstein she leads the "Regulatory Autoantibodies" research group focussed on functional autoantibodies to G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCR). By investigating the role of GPCR autoantibodies, her group aims to uncover mechanisms of inflammatory vascular processes and develop new therapies. To answer important questions about the pathogenesis of sclerosis, the group also investigates the importance of extracellular vesicles, which play an obligatory role in the immunoregulatory control of inflammation, vasculopathy and fibrosis. Prof Riemekasten's work on ME/CFS includes acting as a principal investigator and project member of sub-projects within the "Immune Mechanisms of ME (IMMME)" research network, which is conducting research into the immunological pathomechanisms of post-infectious ME/CFS.
