Prof Martina Seifert leads the "Vascular Immunology" research group at the Institute of Medical Immunology at Charité - University Medicine Berlin in Germany. Her group explores the influence of cellular and molecular mediators of an immune response on endothelial cell properties and function. In their research, the group analyses the pathomechanisms of endothelial dysfunction (ED) and the modulation of endothelial cell properties. The group investigates endothelial function, the involvement of autoantibodies against endothelial cell antigens and of extracellular vesicles (EV) in blood plasma. To this end, Prof Seifert and team aim to understand the pathophysiology of ED in ME/CFS patients and to find reliable biomarkers that facilitate diagnosis and lead to the identification of potential therapeutic molecules. To achieve this, the group investigates the effects of serum components on the functional and regenerative properties of endothelial cells in post-infectious ME/CFS, in addition to analysing the properties, expression and composition of EV isolated from ME/CFS patients. Her group closely collaborates with the Charité Fatigue Center (CFC) on several projects. Prof. Seifert is also a member of the "Identification of Biopathological Signatures of Post-exertional Malaise in ME/CFS (BioSig-PEM)" joint research project.
