Dr (MD) Bettina Hohberger

University of Erlangen–Nuremberg, Germany

Dr Bettina Hohberger is a consultant and molecular scientist at the Eye Clinic at the University Clinic of Erlangen in Germany. Dr Hohbeger is specialised in ophthalmology and holds a PhD in molecular medicine from the Institute of Anatomy at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. She is a member of the "Long Covid and ME/CFS" research group at the Eye Clinic at the University Clinic of Erlangen where she is implementing diagnostic and treatment studies on Long COVID, post-COVID syndrome and ME/CFS. Dr Hohberger is the principal investigator of the "Functional autoantibodies against G protein-coupled receptors in patients with ME/CFS (FAME)" research project, which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The project will investigate the pathogenic role of G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) antibodies in patients with ME/CFS and aims to develop new diagnostic tests for the detection of functionally active autoantibodies against GPCRs. The project also aims to clarify the prevalence of autoantibodies against GPCRs in adults and young children with ME/CFS, what triggers the formation of these autoantibodies after infections, and whether the detection of GPCR antibodies correlates with clinical symptoms.
