Prof Uta Behrends is a specialist in pediatrics and adolescent medicine with a focus on pediatric hematology and oncology and head of the MRI Chronic Fatigue Center (MCFC) for young people at the Technical University of Munich Hospital and the Munich Schwabing Clinic in Germany. The focus of the MCFC lies on post-infectious fatigue after glandular fever caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and after COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2 (Long COVID or post-COVID syndrome). At the MCFC, Prof. Behrends set up Germany's first pediatric ME/CFS outpatient clinic in 2019 and has since established a range of different translational, clinical, and health care research projects on ME/CFS. Among others, she is a principal investigator for sub-projects of the "Characterisation of autoimmune responses to identify targets in ME/CFS (CURE-ME)", "Identification of biopathological signatures of post-exertional malaise in ME/CFS (BioSig-PEM)", and "Immune Mechanisms of ME (IMMME)" research networks, in addition to contributing to post-COVID research within the "Network of University Medicine (NUM)". Prof Behrends is the lead coordinator of the nation-wide pediatric network for healthcare and research on post-COVID syndrome, similar post-acute infection syndromes (PAIS), Post-VAC, and ME/CFS ("PEDNET-LC"), which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG).
