Prof Nina Babel studied medicine at Charité - University Medicine Berlin and completed her training in internal medicine, nephrology and immunology. The focus of her work as a doctor and researcher lies on the diagnosis and therapy of diseases associated with an impaired immune response. The establishment of personalised treatment regimes based on diagnostic results plays a major role in her work. Her research group "Viral Immunity and Immune Monitoring", hosted by the Berlin Institute of Health at Charité (BIH) and the Institute of Research and Education at the St Josef-Hospital in Bochum, is developing new parameters and technologies for monitoring the individual immune response, including the risk of viral infection and virus-associated complications. Recurrent infections due to immune deficiency and long/post-COVID syndrome are among the most common clinical pictures seen in her consultation. As part of her research-oriented medical work, Prof Babel initiated and led several national and international studies on the monitoring and personalised therapy of patients with immune deficiencies. She has published over 300 scientific papers, including more than 50 studies on SARS-CoV-2 and long/post-COVID-specific immunity.
