Prof Nina Babel provided an overview of approaches to intravenous IgG immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy for ME/CFS. This treatment involves injecting ME/CFS patients with immunoglobulins from healthy individuals. In other autoimmune diseases, this therapy is used, for example, to reduce chronic inflammatory reactions, neutralise autoantibodies, and modulate the immune system. In the 1990s, randomised controlled clinical trials of IVIG in ME/CFS produced mixed results. Recent case studies show positive effects in ME/CFS and Long COVID (e.g. reduced fatigue, increased physical activity). However, large-scale clinical trials are still lacking, and it is not yet known which subgroups of patients respond positively to the treatment. Future research is needed to determine which dosage, frequency, and duration of therapy are effective.
